SULAM PROGRAM: MAINTAINING SCHOOL GROUNDS WITH RECYCLED MATERIALS USING FERRO-CEMENT CONSTRUCTION METHODS
On June 7, 2024, the Faculty of Civil Engineering & Technology (FKTA), Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) in collaboration with Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Derma successfully organized the program "Maintaining School Grounds with Recycled Materials Using Ferro-Cement Construction Methods." This program involved the participation of 23 Form 4 Visual Arts students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Derma.
This program is part of UniMAP's efforts to enhance community knowledge and awareness through the Service Learning Malaysia (SULAM) initiative. Five final-year students from the Bachelor of Civil Engineering and Bachelor of Environmental Engineering programs were involved in the implementation of this SULAM initiative and served as the program's organizing committee and facilitators. Participants were exposed to the methods of making flower pots using ferro-cement and recycled materials, in addition to strengthening the relationship between Universiti Malaysia Perlis students and the school community.
The main purpose of organizing the program is to convey issues related to environmental sustainability and eco-friendly solutions to reuse waste materials into valuable products for the school community. By transforming these waste materials into useful items, the program aims to provide quality education by creating sustainable cities and communities to address improper waste disposal issues and reduce adverse environmental impacts.
FKTA would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to Puan Haliah Binti Othman, Principal of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Derma; Cikgu Fadli, Head of the Visual Arts Education Committee; and the teachers who attended and provided excellent cooperation in making this program a success.
Organizer: Final-year FKTA students in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Perlis.
